Route 66 was more than just a road that ran from Illinois to California, it was the main street of America. Its birth in 1926 has in the process endured the wrath of nature! In some places the old highway may only be a service road or paved fragments of original alignments that run off into the weeds, but the very act of finding it is part of our adventure! Come along with us and ride on a piece of history that you will remember forever! We will leave from Ontario, CA on Foothill Blvd/Route 66 heading east to San Bernardino where we will follow beside the 15 Frwy and up and over Cajon Pass to Victorville. The pass was created by movements in the San Andreas fault and lies between the San Bernardino Mtns and the San Gabriels. On the east we’ll see the Mormon Rocks named for Mormon settlers passing through in 1851 from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.

Now we’ll really start feeling like we are going back in time! In Victorville we pick up Nat’l Trails Hwy/Route 66, which is now main street in old town Victorville. At this point we are also on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert.   We ride through Newberry Springs which was the first watering hole for wagon trains west of the Colorado River. Amboy is one of California’s oldest towns dating back to 1858, from film town to ghost town. From here we ride towards the Colorado River. Our route takes us through the Mojave Desert and a corner of 29 Palms Marine Corps Base. Essex is an historic oasis along Route 66 proving free water for travelers. We’ll stop off in Laughlin, NV and do some gambling?!

Oatman, AZ is our next destination. It began as a mining tent camp and now is a one street authentic western town with burros roaming through it. Riding on to Kingman, which is called the heart of Historic Route 66 because it is the longest original stretch of the highway, we’ll have lots of twisty roads, beautiful desert landscapes filled with an assortment of cactuses. We’ll stop at the Mother Lode Harley-Davidson dealer to hang out and grab some cool hydration!

From here we ride to the Grand Canyon via Williams for Rod’s Famous Steak House, a truly historic business since 1946! The Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion in the world with incomparable vistas that have dazzled its visitors for centuries! As the Colorado River carves through the earth, it opens the canyon to almost 6,000 ft in depth and at places nearly 18 miles across! The striated rock and towering buttes and mesas become saturated with color at sunrise and sunset! The next day we head for beautiful Lake Powell! Along the way we ride through the Painted Desert, Echo Cliffs, and the Vermillion Cliffs.

Our next destination is Bryce Canyon Nat’l Park! Bryce is famous for its geology such as the Claron Formation into slot canyons, windows, fins and spires. The limestone rock is tinted in numerous colors and rocks create a landscape of mazes! The area offers panoramic views of three states and almost 200 miles visibility! Zion Nat’l Park is our next stop. Zion Nat’l Park offers breathtaking vistas, slot canyons, glistening pools, delicate water falls, and ride through a mile long tunnel to stunning towering cliffs! Leaving Zion we’ll stop at Mesquite for the night and then ride towards Death Valley! Death Valleys has the lowest elevation in North America at 282 ft below sea level, has over 1,000 plant species and 98 species of animals despite its severe desert climate. Everyone enjoys stops at Furnace Creek Village and Stovepipe Wells Village! We’ll of course take a side trip to see Scotty’s Castle, a Mediterranean style mansion in the middle of the desert! Leaving Death Valley, we’ll ride into Olancha and head south on Hwy 395 back to Ontario!
