Leaving from Spokane, Washington, we will try to stay on the countryside roads as much as possible. Riding east over Fourth of July Pass, towards Mullan, our goal is to go through every small mining town along the route! The Morning Star Mine (1884) was one of the first silver-lead mines in the Coeur d’Alene River drainage. Next we’ll visit Burke. In the 1930’s, it was called “an unprepossessing town in a scalded and unlovely area”! At the time, the towns’ mine, Hecla, was the fifth among lead producers of the world! We’ll ride through Pritchard and Murray, which has the distinction of being the oldest existing town in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District. People still live in Murray and small businesses operate out of original buildings including a museum preserving the town’s long history. From Murray we ride up and over Thompson Pass and ride along the Clark Fork River to our evening at a wonderful hot springs with excellent accommodations!

In the morning we ride along the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area to Troy, Montana, where we pick up the Kootenai River and over to Bonners Ferry. When gold was discovered in 1863 in the East Kootenays of British Columbia, an enterprising merchant by the name of Edwin Bonner established a ferry across the broad Kootenai River. A steamer named “Midge” carried passengers and freight until 1908 between Bonners Ferry and British Columbia. We’ll continue south via country roads to Naples and back to either Sandpoint or Spokane! This is a ride full of rich history!
