Tour Description: Lewis and Clark Trail
The Lewis & Clark Expedition was one of the most dramatic and significant episodes in the history of the United States. It stands, incomparably, as an epic journey in the exploration of the American West. The Idaho portion of the trail represents the most difficult part of the journey for Lewis and Clark’s trek across the western territory on their quest to discover a passage to the Pacific Ocean. We begin in Spokane, Washington riding to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, a beautiful city located on Lake Coeur d’Alene, which means “heart of the awl” in French. We’ll ride south to Lewiston where the Clearwater and Snake Rivers meet, to pick up Lewis and Clark’s route. This route also passes through the homeland of the Nez Perce people. We’ll visit Canoe Camp, where Lewis & Clark were helped by the Nez Perce Indians making canoes. They would take these canoes to the Pacific Ocean. Beyond Orofino, steep bluffs rise along the Clearwater and at Long Camp, the Lewis & Clark expedition waited for winter snows to melt before they could continue east in the spring of 1806. We follow the Lochsa River to Missoula, Montana and cross the Bitterroot Range at Lolo Pass (5,233 ft elevation). Further south is Salmon, Idaho, where the expedition crossed the Continental Divide, and also their guide Sacagawea was born. We’ll follow the Salmon River south through the Lemhi and Lost River Ranges and head west through Sawtooth Wilderness Area, over Banner Summit (7,020 ft elevation). Riding north, we follow the South Fork of the Payette River through Boise National Forest. At McCall we’ll find a resort town sitting on the edge of Payette Lake, formerly a logging community and now nicknamed “Ski Town USA”. We continue north through the Payette National Forest, ski areas and passes! We stop at Riggins, which is nestled deep in a canyon at the confluence of the Salmon River and the Little Salmon River. We will continue back to Lewiston, which has the distinction of being Idaho’s only seaport and the western United States’ furthest inland seaport! We take a short ride north to Spokane where we make our final stop! Glacier/Banff-Jasper National Parks | NorthernCascades/B.C.
