Tour Description: Northern Cascades/B.C. Canada
This tour begins riding north along the Pend Oreille River, which drains from Lake Pend Oreille, flowing north and joining the Columbia River at the Canadian border. Our senses are filled with pine from the Kaniksu Nat’l Forest on both sides, the river and riding Tiger Pass with its twisties makes the ride fun and beautiful! We ride on through Colville Nat’l Forest and cross the Columbia River at Kettle Falls. We ride through sprawling ranch country and we’ll see classic sagebrush covered western hill country to awesome Sherman pass! At Winthrop we’ll find a re-created frontier town with old west facades, wooden sidewalks, and great little novelty shops! Our next day finds us in the northern Cascades, know as the American Alps! Riding beautiful mountain passes such as Washington Pass at 5477 ft, the highest on the North Cascades Hwy. We’ll have a stunning panoramic view of the Cascade Mtn peaks, truly a memorable sight! At Rainy Pass we cross the Pacific Crest National Trail, the famous foot trail from Mexico to Canada! Our ride continues with still more beauty with views of Diablo Lake, 242 Ft Gorge Creek Falls, and Ross Lake Nat’l Recreation Area, which is part of North Cascades Nat’l Park. The Skagit River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, roars through rocky gorges and is an excellent area to view bald eagles due to the Skagit chum salmon in the river! From here we enter the Skagit River Valley, a mosaic of orchards, farms, and low mountains edged in thick evergreens! At Sedro Woolley we head north to Glacier and ride another scenic road through Mt Baker Wilderness. We’ll see Nooksack Falls at a stunning 175 ft and the Nooksack River thrashing hundreds of feet below, glacier clad mountains and the sky is dominated by 9127 ft Mt Shuksan, a massive mountain decorated with jagged ridges, glaciers, and rock outcroppings! This spur makes a stunning finish at 5140 ft Artist Point. From here we cross into Canada and ride the TransCanada Hwy! Fraser Canyon is one of the highlights of this ride. The tumultuous Fraser River’s massive volume of water is forced through a narrow channel between the sheer rock faces of the Cascade and Coast mountains, gouging out a steep, awe-inspiring canyon! The Fraser River reaches its awesome crescendo at Hell’s Gate, where it is forced through a gorge where the thrashing water thunders through with incredible power! Riding north, the scenery slowly takes on dryer characteristics. At Kamloops we head east catching the north end of Okanagan Lake and ride through the Okanagan Highlands. We’ll catch the ferry and ride along Upper Arrow Lake and turn south along Slocan Lake and a beautiful pass to Ainsworth Hot Springs to soak the muscles for the evening! Our last day we ride along Kootenay Lake and back into Washington!
